Burglary Prevention

Burglary victims often wonder why the burglar picked on their house. To find out you need to consider:

"How does a burglar's mind work?"

Burglary, on the whole, is an opportunist crime. A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured:

· side gates open

· accessible windows open

· ladders left out, allowing access to otherwise inaccessible windows

· garden tools available to force entry

· untrimmed hedges or high fences preventing natural surveillance

Each of these makes access to the building far simpler and is an indication to the prospective burglar that it's worth a second look.

Residents of multi occupancy dwellings or flats should be mindful not to grant entry to people via an entry phone system, if they do not know them, and to be cautious of people seeking to 'tailgate' them into buildings.

The question is, are the occupants in?

· milk bottles or parcels on the doorstep

· newspapers and mail in the letter box

· unlit houses after dark

· all windows shut in very hot weather

These are signs telling the burglar that he is unlikely to be disturbed in the course of his work. Naturally, circumstances may arise when such situations may be unavoidable. If we can take measures that tell the burglar that this building is too difficult or too risky a target, he will hopefully move on.

To a burglar, a stuffed letter box is a dead giveaway when you’re not at home. Ask a neighbour to remove your post while you are away.

Are you leaving a thief the key to your house?

· never leave a spare key concealed anywhere near the front door - burglars know all the hiding places

· prevent letterbox burglaries by storing keys away from the front door

· do not label your house keys in case you lose them and they fall into the wrong hands.

Remove temptation

· where possible, try to keep valuables out of sight from windows.

Make it look as though your house is occupied

· install timers which switch lights or radios on and off automatically.

· have a neighbour or friend pop round to clear your letter box or doorstep.

· encourage a neighbour to park on your drive.

· if going out after dark, draw the curtains, leave some lights on and a radio playing.

To a burglar, a dark doorway is an opportunity to hide. Fit a security light over your front door to deter burglars.

If you are away for extended periods.

· cancel the delivery of milk and newspapers

· disconnect the telephone answering machine, or re-word your greeting message to give the impression that you are only temporarily unable to answer.

· enlist the help of a neighbour, friend or relative to keep a regular eye on your property and keep the front door clear of deliveries.

· if you are prepared to leave a key with a willing neighbour/relative, ask for curtains to be drawn and lights to be put on at night. If snow is on the ground a few footprints will make the house appear inhabited.

· check your insurance policy. Some insurance policies for contents don't cover you if you are away for more than 30 days.

· set your burglar alarm.

· if you do not have an alarm, consider investing a few pounds in a dummy alarm box. It may well deter the opportunist thief.

Remember: Remove the Opportunity - Prevent the Burglary

To a burglar, a dark house is an empty house. Attaching a timer to a lamp will make your home appear occupied even when it isn’t.

I have been told by Police today that we need to be specific in reporting incidents about Mopeds such as date of incident, time of incident, what were they doing, how this impact on you?

for example

What is the impact of the incident on you?

Describe what moped was doing for example

Wheeling

Reving Engines

Driving dangerously

Driving on Pavements

Vandalising cars and houses

Driving without safety equipment

etc etc

It is very important to keep up with the reporting and if possible to obtain the number plates.

Neighbourhood Watch is about bringing people closer together and involving them in local life. A stronger community spirit grows as people get to know each other and look out for each other. Neighbourhood Watch allows the whole community to pull together to tackle local problems. Joining a scheme gives you the chance to play a vital role in your community in the drive against crimes such as burglary and to combat social nuisance like vandalism and graffiti

Updates

Council has done the following works post consultation meeting. Thanks to all Council members inclusive of Councillors, Police to and agree and carry out the proposed works. Thanks to all residents for supporting me to take the initiative and see it through. The following works are completed.

Replaced the existing gate of Ludlow Park entrance on Ludlow Road
Installed gates on four other entrances of Ludlow Park
They have installed extra long bollard in the fence to make it stronger on the Ludlow road entrance
They have removed half of the mound from the Ludlow Road entrance. This makes the area visible from Ludlow Road.
Secure the green barrier on Ludlow Road Entrance so that dogs and kids can't run through the gaps. (New)
The bench near the Ludlow Park entrance has been taken out and will be relocated soon. (New)

The following proposed works will be completed soon. This was agreed by the Council in the consultation meeting in the library and also in another meeting held in the park on 25/05/2010.

Landscaping the Park
Consultation to build a play area in the park .
Install Dog Bins
Move the Bench from Ludlow Road entrance to a site agreed by residents

The meeting was quite successful. Council shared their proposals for the works in the meeting which they are hoping to complete end of March 2010. More details to come soon.
Ludlow Park Meeting in Feltham Library. This is to see the Council Plans for the Park and our opportunity to discuss issues etc. This will be held on 25 Feb 2010 between 5 and 8 PM. This was initiated because of my and residents campaign to reduce anti social behaviour from the park and surroundings. Thanks to the Council that they listened to me and all the residents living in this area.
Poplar Way Pavement is in a mess and needs cleaning. This is because of fallen leaves and wet weather. The pavements needs to be cleaned as it has become a dangerous place to walk and may cause accidents. This has been reported to the Council Street Cleaning department.
A drain is blocked on Hanworth Road Feltham off Pevensey Road near Hounslow Cemetry. It looks like this drain is going burst. It has been reported to Hounslow Council.
Council has taken action to remove the overgrown weeds from the Service Road off Harvest Road Feltham
There has been a series of counterfeit £20 notes coming to the notice of police right across the Hounslow borough. Please be mindful when you are receiving a £20 note that it is not a forgery. They are very good and look like the real notes with one exception. This is that there is no watermark of the Queens Head on the left hand side of the note in the white strip. If you hold it up to the light, a good note will clearly show this and a bad one will be blank. There has also been a few £50 notes, these have a variation of faults. Be careful, if in doubt then do not accept them.

As a result of the Safe Neighbourhood Meetings, and reporting to Police, more Police presence is noticed in the area which is all positive for the residents. Local Councils has also done Ludlow Park consultation which was quite positive. This was to request resident views on neighbourhood issues about Ludlow Park. The council is reviewing the results of the consultation.
An empty house was reported to the Council as empty.
Safe Neighbourhood Watch Meetings have been very succesful. More than 40 people attended these meetings. All decided to combat the ASB by actively Reporting to the Police. Anti Social Behaviour in Ludlow Park was also discussed, and priorities were agreed. The meeting minutes were sent to the Councillors and Police.
POSTAL SCAM

The following scam is operating across the UK and has been confirmed by the ROYAL MAIL. Please ignore any cards referring to PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) regarding undelivered parcels and asking to contact a premium rate number 0906 6611911. DO NOT call this number as this is a SCAM operating overseas and you will be billed fifteen pounds (£15) for the call. Contact the Royal Mail Fraud department on 0207 239 6655 if you have been a victim.

BOGUS CHARITY ORGANISATIONS - Christmas will soon be upon us and now is the time for the Bogus Charity organisations to exploit the kindness of the public. Please be aware when donating or buying on behalf of children, especially on your door step, that some of these so-called charities are mainly lining the pockets of the representatives. It is very hard to turn your backs on the needy, especially where children are concerned. Please ensure you are absolutely satisfied that your money is going to a well deserved cause.
